A building at the centre of safety fears in Paignton has forced Torbay Council to step in using emergency powers ahead of the busy English Riviera Airshow weekend.
Council engineers were at 62-70 Victoria Street on Sunday, May 24 and again on Monday, May 25 to assess the situation alongside contractors after concerns were raised about the condition of the property.
In a statement, Torbay Council said it had acted because of a lack of action from the building’s owners.
The council said: “Our engineers were on site yesterday (Sunday) and again this morning (Monday), meeting with contractors to assess the options available.
“In the absence of action from the owners, we are using our emergency powers to ensure the building does not pose any risk to public safety, which remains our top priority.”

The authority said work would continue throughout the week as preparations continue for the English Riviera Airshow.
The statement added: “As we approach the English Riviera Airshow this weekend, our teams will continue working to maintain public safety and keep access to the public transport network open. Further updates will be provided over the coming days.”
People travelling into Paignton have been advised to use seafront routes and check for updates from public transport operators before setting off.
Torbay Council also warned that the taxi rank at Paignton railway station is currently inaccessible, with alternative ranks available at both ends of Torbay Road.
Pedestrians have been advised to use the marked walkway to access bus and train services.
The council added: “We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”
