Police seize illegal e-bike and e-scooters in Torquay road crackdown

Police have seized an illegal e-bike and two e-scooters during a targeted operation aimed at tackling the unlawful use of electric vehicles on public roads and in public spaces.

Officers from Torquay Neighbourhood Support Team and Torquay Neighbourhood Team carried out Operation Leapstring using a combination of plain-clothes and uniformed officers alongside a range of policing tactics.

During the operation, officers seized one illegal e-bike, which police said was not pedal-assisted and could operate well above the legal speed restrictions, meaning it is classed as a motor vehicle under UK road traffic legislation.

Two e-scooters were also seized.

Police said the vehicles did not comply with UK road traffic legislation for use on public roads or highways. They added that manufacturers and retailers often make this clear at the point of sale, although the advice is sometimes ignored.

In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Illegal e-bikes and e-scooters are used by both adults and young people and are often linked to anti-social behaviour and criminality. More importantly, they can pose a significant risk to the rider and to other members of the public.”

The force is also urging anyone considering buying an e-bike or e-scooter for themselves or a child to understand the law and where the vehicles can legally be used before making a purchase.

Officers said they would continue carrying out Operation Leapstring across South Devon and Torbay over the coming months.
