Foam, flips and fearless racers as Bideford Soapbox Derby speeds back

Speed, spectacular crashes and plenty of homemade ingenuity will take centre stage as one of North Devon’s most popular community events returns, with daring drivers preparing to tackle a challenging course packed with jumps, chicanes and crowd-pleasing obstacles.

The Bideford Soapbox Derby returns to Bideford Quay on Sunday, July 5, with racing beginning at midday after a morning of team preparations and entertainment.

More than 20 homemade soapboxes are expected to take on a course featuring jumps, chicanes, the famous foam fountain and the legendary wipe-out corner.

Organisers said last year’s event saw a variety of creative entries, with some soapboxes clearing the ramps, others coming unstuck at the wipe-out corner and several failing to survive the notorious boneshaker ramp.

This year’s course will once again feature four ramps, including the seesaw and boneshaker obstacles, designed by Jason Poulton. The course is intended to test both the durability of the homemade soapboxes and the skill of the drivers.

Away from the racing, visitors will be able to enjoy food and drink, including savoury meals, sweet treats and refreshments from a licensed bar. Stalls from across Devon, children’s rides and entertainment throughout the day will also be available.

The day’s programme includes team scrutineering from 10am before the Quay opens at 11am. The Bideford Youth Pipe Band will perform at 11.30am, followed by Clinton the Bench’s ceremonial run at 11.45am ahead of the first race session at midday.

A lunch break is scheduled from 1.30pm until 2.30pm before racing resumes, subject to any delays. Awards and celebrations are expected to begin from 4.30pm.

Organisers have advised that timings may change depending on the racing and any incidents on the course.

This year’s event will also support the charity Southwest Blood Bikes.

The organisers say the event is designed to provide entertainment for all ages, whether visitors are supporting their favourite team, admiring the homemade soapboxes or enjoying the attractions along the Quay.
