A group of school pupils have turned small acts of kindness into a meaningful boost for people facing homelessness, raising more than £500 and delivering essential supplies directly to those in need.
Students at Lipson Co-operative Academy raised a total of £501.30 for the Shekinah Centre through a series of activities, including a bake sale, fundraising challenges and a Christmas jumper and pyjama mufti day.
The money was used to purchase essential items such as toiletries and warm clothing, which were donated to the charity.
Alongside the fundraising, pupils, staff and families also gave hats, scarves, gloves, coats and other winter clothing to support people during the colder months.
The Shekinah Centre supports people experiencing homelessness in Plymouth, offering services including meals, showers and laundry facilities, clean clothing, and advice on housing, health and wellbeing.
A group of students visited the charity’s base at Stonehouse Creek to deliver the donations and were given a tour of the facilities, providing a first-hand insight into its work.
Tom Goodman, headteacher designate at Lipson Co-operative Academy, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the generosity shown by our students, staff and families.
“Supporting the Shekinah Centre has helped our pupils see how small actions, when brought together, can make a real difference to people in our city.”
Moira Marder, chief executive of the Ted Wragg Trust, said: “It’s wonderful to see students, staff and families come together to support their local community.
“Our students have not only raised vital funds and donated essential items but also learned the powerful impact kindness can have on the lives of others.”
The school is part of the Ted Wragg Trust and said the initiative reflects its focus on encouraging pupils to support others alongside their academic studies.
