Bean there done that – Captain Beany sets quirky charity world record

A charity challenge involving a bath filled with baked beans has broken a new world record after an unusual river journey raised thousands of pounds for children with life-limiting illnesses and disabilities.

A specially prepared raft carrying a bath filled with 50 litres of baked beans completed a 9.25-mile paddle from Barnstaple to Bideford in aid of Children’s Holiday Foundation North Devon. The challenge attracted supporters along the route and at the finish.

The event was organised to raise awareness and money for the charity, which provides special holidays for children with life-limiting illnesses and disabilities.

So far, the challenge has raised £2,520, with donations remaining open.

The event also marked 40 years since Captain Beany’s 100-hour Bath of Beans world record, with organisers describing the latest challenge as a celebration of that achievement.

At 71 years old, Captain Beany completed the challenge to set what organisers say is a new Bath of Beans world record.

Captain Beany said: “After 40 years of bean-filled madness, it was absolutely bean-tastic to take on another challenge and help set a brand new Bath of Beans world record here in North Devon.

“To paddle 9.25 miles in a bath of beans for such a wonderful charity was truly special. The support from everyone along the route was amazing, and I am so proud to have been part of something that brings smiles, laughter and support to Children’s Holiday Foundation North Devon.”

Andrew Bowers, who helped organise the challenge, said: “What a day, what a community. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who donated and helped us raise money for Children’s Holiday Foundation North Devon.

“The support along the route and at the finish line was brilliant. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us on, especially our number one fans, Jack and Bradley. It made such a difference to everyone involved.”

Organisers thanked Dave, from Bideford Soapbox Derby, for building and preparing the raft, along with Becky for providing support on the day.

They also thanked paddle team members Mikey, Rob, Steve, Chris, Demi, Sharon and Dylan, as well as headline sponsor Brunswick Wharf Regeneration and event clothing supporters Braddicks Leisure, HWH Insurance Brokers, Affinity Devon Outlet Shopping, Simpkins Edwards LLP and LEAN Projects.

Organisers said the challenge brought together local businesses, volunteers and spectators from across North Devon and suggested further bean-themed community events could take place in the future.
