Top teaching honour crowns former Lipson head after remarkable school turnaround

A former Plymouth head teacher has been recognised with one of the UK’s highest teaching honours after a career spanning almost four decades, with students, parents and colleagues praising his lasting impact on education.

Martin Brook has received a Silver Pearson National Teaching Award for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of his contribution to education over nearly 40 years. He was presented with the award during a celebration at Lipson Co-operative Academy, where he served as head teacher until Easter this year.

The award was presented by four former and current students who played a key role in the judging process. Two are current students at the academy, while two former students now work there as learning mentors.

Judges also heard evidence from governors, parents and current and former colleagues, who highlighted Martin’s leadership, commitment to young people and influence on education across Plymouth and the South West.

The 99 Silver Pearson National Teaching Award winners were announced as part of National Thank a Teacher Day celebrations. They now form the shortlist for the Gold awards, which will be announced later this year at a ceremony in London and on BBC One’s The One Show.

Martin joined Lipson Co-operative Academy in 2019 when the school was facing significant challenges. Initially appointed for a single day to provide stability, he remained in the role and oversaw the school’s improvement over the following seven years, during which it became recognised for both academic success and its inclusive culture.

Throughout his career, Martin has promoted a culture of belonging, kindness and high expectations. He has also mentored school leaders across the region, supported wider school improvement and helped develop future education leaders.

Moira Marder, chief executive of the Ted Wragg Trust, said: “Martin’s contribution to education over nearly forty years is simply extraordinary. He has transformed the life chances of thousands of young people and inspired countless colleagues throughout his career.

“What makes this recognition particularly special is that the judges heard directly from students, former students, families, governors and colleagues whose lives have been touched by Martin’s leadership.

“The fact that students he once taught and supported were able to present him with this award is a testament to the lasting difference he has made.

“We are incredibly proud to see Martin recognised with a Silver Pearson National Teaching Award and delighted that his remarkable contribution to education is being celebrated on a national stage. I can think of no one more deserving.”

Sharon Hague, chief executive of Pearson UK, said: “We are proud to take this opportunity to say thank you to the teachers up and down the country who make our schools so special. This year’s Silver winners represent the amazing dedication and brilliant work that goes on in classrooms across the country, and we’re delighted to be celebrating them today.”
