A colourful lighthouse created by schoolchildren has taken pride of place in a major summer exhibition, giving young artists the chance to showcase their creativity to thousands of visitors.
Pupils from Drake Primary Academy, part of the Reach South Academy Trust, have created their own lighthouse sculpture, which is now on display at The Box Plymouth as part of this summer’s Little Lights exhibition.
The pupils spent several weeks designing and decorating the metre-tall sculpture before it was installed at the city museum and gallery.
Little Lights features colourful lighthouse sculptures created by children and young people from schools, colleges and youth organisations across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall. The exhibition runs alongside St Luke’s Guiding Lights sculpture trail, which includes more than 40 larger lighthouse sculptures displayed across Plymouth.
The project reflects Drake Primary Academy’s commitment to being at the heart of its local community by creating opportunities for pupils to connect with others and share their creativity beyond the school gates.
Year five pupils from the school visited The Box to see their completed artwork on display and discover that it had become part of the summer exhibition for visitors to enjoy.
St Luke’s Guiding Lights runs across Plymouth until September, with the lighthouse sculptures bringing communities together through art while supporting the work of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.
Jessica Plummer, assistant headteacher at Drake Primary Academy, said: “It has been wonderful to see our pupils’ creativity celebrated through Little Lights.
“They had great fun designing and decorating their lighthouse sculpture, and we are delighted that visitors to The Box will be able to enjoy their work this summer.”
