From ambulances to animals school visits open pupils eyes to futures

Children at Lamerton Church of England Academy, part of the Learning Academy Partnership, have taken part in a series of visits from local professionals, offering first-hand insight into careers that support and serve the community.

The programme began with a visit from paramedic Louise, who brought an ambulance to the school. Pupils were able to explore inside the vehicle, ask questions about emergency care and hear the sirens used in urgent situations.

The school later welcomed Amy, Maria and Emma. Amy spoke about her work as a midwife, explaining how babies are cared for before, during and after birth. During the session, pupils listened to a baby’s heartbeat using a doppler and observed movement during pregnancy.

Emma also introduced her six-week-old baby, Bertie, to the class.

Laura then visited to discuss her role in a veterinary practice, explaining how she cares for animals. She also donated soft toy animals and a veterinary role play kit, which pupils have since used in classroom activities.

The visits continued with local farmer Ali, who brought three calves to the school, including one aged just three days. Pupils learned about animal care and farming life, and were told that milk from his cows is used to produce Cathedral City cheese.

Finally, specialist lung doctor Jen delivered a session using a 3D model of the human body to explain how the lungs and other organs function. The model remained in school for further learning.

Headteacher Melody Sterry said: “We are incredibly proud of the strong sense of community we have here at Lamerton, and these visits have been a perfect example of that in action.

“The children have been inspired by meeting people who make such a difference in our everyday lives. These experiences not only deepen their understanding but also spark curiosity and ambition for the future.”

Tracey Cleverly, chief executive of the Learning Academy Partnership, added: “Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping children connect their learning to the real world.

“Hearing directly from professionals across such a wide range of roles helps to broaden horizons and raise aspirations. We are extremely grateful to the families and community members who have given their time so generously to support this enriching experience.”
