Full steam to the past as pupils explore two centuries of rail travel

A journey through two centuries of railway history gave young pupils the chance to step back in time while learning about the future of Britain’s railways.

Children in Years Three and Four at St Michael’s C of E Academy took part in a field trip on a steam train travelling between Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside as part of celebrations marking 200 years of the modern railway.

The visit coincided with the Railway 200 Exhibition Train, Inspiration, which was stationed at Totnes Riverside on the South Devon Railway. Co-curated with the National Railway Museum, the exhibition featured rare artefacts and information exploring the impact railways have had on society.

During the trip, pupils took part in engineering challenges and learned about a range of careers within the railway industry. The experience combined travel on a heritage steam railway with interactive exhibits designed to showcase both the history and future of rail transport.

The South Devon Railway recreates travel on a traditional Great Western Railway branch line, operating between Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside and reflecting the style of railway journeys from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The railway is supported by volunteers who carry out a variety of operational and public-facing roles, helping to preserve and showcase Britain’s railway heritage.

Julie Edwards, head of academy at St Michael’s C of E Academy, said: “It was fantastic to see our pupils so engaged and curious throughout the trip.

“Experiencing history in motion on the steam train and learning about the future of the railway made it an inspiring day for everyone.”

Tracey Cleverly, chief executive officer of Learning Academy Partnership, said: “Trips like this give children the chance to connect learning with the real world.

“It’s wonderful to see them exploring history, science, and potential careers all in one exciting experience.”

St Michael’s C of E Academy is part of the Learning Academy Partnership, a trust comprising 18 schools across Cornwall, Devon and Torbay. The school is based in Paignton.
