Booze seizures and beach litter as police tackle Dawlish Warren gathering

Police seized a large quantity of alcohol after officers responded to reports of a major gathering of young people at Dawlish Warren Beach, with concerns raised over safety as the tide came in.

Neighbourhood officers from across South Devon attended the beach on Friday, May 22 after receiving reports and intelligence about a large number of young people gathering in the area, including some who had travelled from across South Devon.

Devon and Cornwall Police said their response focused on engagement and education, with officers speaking to those present throughout the evening.

A spokesperson for the force said the majority of those at the beach were “cooperative and respectful”, although officers made a large number of alcohol seizures during the operation.

Police said their primary concern was public safety, particularly due to the number of young people present who were under the influence of alcohol while on the beach as the tide was coming in.

The force said its aim was to safeguard those present and ensure people were able to leave the area safely.

Officers also expressed disappointment after being required to help clear litter left on the beach following the gathering.

The spokesperson said: “We would urge everyone to take responsibility for the environment.”

Police said they were aware of further planned gatherings across South Devon and would continue taking a proactive approach focused on engagement and education.

The force also urged parents and guardians to consider the risks linked to large unsupervised public gatherings when deciding whether their children should attend such events.
